Lasik Surgery

What are the prerequisites for spectacle removal surgery ?
In order to be eligible for LASIK surgery, you must be at least 18 years old and have a stable prescription for at least 12 months. You should also have healthy eyes with no major eye diseases. The surgeon will check the eye health by doing certain tests (LASIK Workup) to check which procedure of spectacle removal surgery is best suited for you.

What are the options for spectacle removal ?

  •  LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis)
  • PRK (photorefractive keratectomy)
  • SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction
  • ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)

What is LASIK ?
There are a number of different types of spectacle removal surgery, but the most common is LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis). This procedure uses a laser or Blade to create a thin flap in the cornea, which is then lifted so that the underlying tissue can be reshaped. After the tissue is reshaped, the flap is replaced and the eye heals.

What is bladeless LASIK ?
The bladeless LASIK procedure is similar to LASIK, but instead of using a traditional blade to create a flap in the cornea, a femtosecond laser is used. This laser is able to create a more precise flap, as compared to traditional blade.

What are different types of LASIK ?
 Normal LASIK
 Wavefront optimized LASIK
 Custom LASIK
 Topoguided LASIK (Contoura)
All the above types involve the basic step of creating a flap, the Laser to correct the spectacle number or refractive error is guided according to measurements made by specialized machines to give more precise and individualized vision correction.

What is Contoura ?
The Contoura LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) procedure is a type of refractive surgery that is used to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The Contoura LASIK procedure, based on Wavelight platform, is similar to LASIK, but more measurements from the cornea are used to create precise algorithm for spectacle removal, which leads to better results.

What is PRK ?
PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a type of refractive surgery that is used to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. PRK is similar to LASIK, but instead of creating a flap in the cornea, the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is removed. This allows the surgeon to access the underlying tissue, which is then reshaped. After the tissue is reshaped, the epithelium grows back and the eye heals.

What are different types of PRK
Trans PRK, Epi Contoura / Streamlight, normal PRK, Wavefront optimized PRK are different types of PRK. The basic step of epithelial removal remains the same for all methods. TranPRK, Streamlight/Epicontoura use laser to remove epithelium and are
touchless, bladeless method of spectacle removal surgery.

What is SMILE procedure ?
The SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) procedure is a type of refractive surgery that is used to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The SMILE procedure is similar to LASIK, but instead of creating a flap in the cornea, a small lenticule (a disc-shaped piece of tissue) is extracted from the cornea. This allows the surgeon to access the underlying tissue, which is then reshaped. After the tissue is reshaped, the lenticule is replaced and the eye heals.

Which is better LASIK or PRK or SMILE ?
There is no definitive answer as to which is better – SMILE vs PRK vs LASIK. All three types of surgery have their own advantages and disadvantages. The best option for you will depend on your individual situation and needs. Your operating surgeon will be able assess best after doing a thorough investigation and workup.

What are complications after Spectacle removal surgery ?
The most common complication after LASIK surgery is dry eye. This can be a temporary or permanent condition. Other potential complications include:
• Infection
• Inflammation
• Flap problems
• Glare, halos, and double vision
• Poor night vision
• Under-correction or over-correction of vision
• Ectasia

What is ICL Surgery ?
ICL surgery is a type of refractive surgery that is used to correct refractive errors. It involves implanting a small lens inside the eye. ICL surgery is an alternative to LASIK /PRK /SMILE surgery and is often used for patients who are not suitable candidates for the the above procedures

What are the risks of ICL surgery?
The risks of ICL surgery include:
• Infection
• Inflammation
• Glare, halos, and double vision
• Poor night vision
• Under-correction or over-correction of vision
• Retinal detachment
• Uveitis
